The display is a huge 6.6-inch screen, with a dewdrop notch at the top for the front camera. The body is plastic and it has a polycarbonate back with a glossy finish, which Samsung calls s “Glasstic”. However, it left a lot of smudges and fingerprints. The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G does not come with a cover included, hence you cannot avoid the smudges on the back until you buy a cover.

The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G comes in two colours, Prism Dot Grey and Prism Dot Black. The Prism Dot Grey has a lot more vibrant colours, which may also seem very flashy to some people.

There was a lot of talk around the screen resolution. The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G comes with a 720p display with a super AMOLED and HD+ display. This is, frankly, disappointing. As a phone costing around 20k, it could definitely deliver better.

The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G also has an in-screen fingerprint sensor, which works perfectly well and overall, the design looks good. It weighs around 193 grams, which seems well distributed and is easy to grip.

The camera module in the Samsung Galaxy M42 5G is square-shaped and houses four sensors, with an LED flash right below. Like the camera module in most phones, this protrudes slightly but doesn’t pose an issue. The dewdrop notch at the top that has a 20-megapixel selfie camera. The quad-camera system on the rear consists of a 48-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. It also offers night mode, portrait mode and videos on 1080p.

The camera feels adequate for a phone of this range, and as usual, Samsung maintains its reputation of good colour projection on display.

The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor. This seems sufficient enough to power this phone smoothly and also supports gaming quite well. The phone comes with a choice between the 6GB and 8GB RAM variants of the Galaxy M42 5G but storage capacity remains the same at 128GB. You can expand storage by up to 1TB using the hybrid dual-SIM tray which means this comes at the cost of the second SIM. There was scope for Samsung to provide another storage variant for this phone. Moving on to the software front, this phone comes with a OneUI 3.1 (not OneUI Core) on an Android 11.
