Key Highlights
- GPS toll system to run with FASTags
- GNSS ETC on chosen highway sections
- Shift to ANPR for smoother tolling and traffic control
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister, announced the Centre’s intention to initiate a GPS-based toll collection system on national highways as a pilot project, in addition to FASTags. Gadkari mentioned that a consultant has been appointed for the project’s implementation, as stated in his written response to Lok Sabha. Also Read | Top Four Features Of Apple Maps
Implementation Of GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System
The Road Transport and Highways Minister highlighted the decision to introduce the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System initially on selected sections of national highways. Currently, FASTags employ RFID technology for toll payments, where the RFID passive tag on vehicles is linked to customers’ prepaid, savings, or current accounts.
Functionality Of GPS-based Toll Collection System
Gadkari explained that the GPS-based technology will charge motorists based on the exact distance traveled on highways. This system involves toll payments being collected via satellite-based GPS imaging on vehicles, deducting money from bank accounts identified by the vehicle’s number plate. ANPR cameras installed on highways facilitate automatic number plate recognition.

Contrasting FASTags With ANPR Technology
While FASTags enable electronic payment at toll plazas without requiring vehicles to stop, the GPS-based system deducts tolls based on distance measured by ANPR technology, rendering toll plazas obsolete.
Tech-based Initiatives
Gadkari emphasized the introduction of tech-based initiatives to enhance system efficiency and promote convenient travel on highways. These initiatives aim to streamline traffic management by eliminating the need for vehicles to stop.
Expected Increase In Toll Revenue
Currently, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) collects approximately Rs. 40,000 crore in toll revenue, expected to rise to Rs. 1.40 trillion in the next 2-3 years.
