Hero MotoCorp Zero Motorcycles $60 Million Investment Hints More New Electric Motorcycle Upcoming In India: Details Inside

Key Highlights

  • Hero MotoCorp invests $60 million.
  • Collaboration hints at new electric motorcycles.
  • Partnership to shape India’s EV future.

In September 2022, Hero MotoCorp made headlines by investing $60 million in Zero Motorcycles, a California-based electric motorcycle manufacturer. This big investment got people talking and wondering how it might affect the future of electric vehicles in India.

For many years, Hero MotoCorp has been a big player in India’s motorcycle industry. They mostly made regular bikes that run on petrol. But in 2022, they took a new step and entered the electric bike market. They introduced the Vida V1, an electric two-wheeler, which came from working together with a Taiwanese electric scooter and technology company called Gogoro.

Hero MotoCorp and Zero Motorcycles’ Partnership

In July 2023, Hero MotoCorp’s Annual Report gave more details about their partnership with Zero Motorcycles. They had a big plan to work together and create top-notch electric motorcycles. They wanted to use Zero’s knowledge in making advanced and powerful electric bikes. This partnership aimed to grow Hero’s electric vehicle lineup, reaching more customers and taking advantage of the worldwide trend towards electric transportation.

The Annual Report showed how well Zero and Hero worked together. They combined Zero’s technical skills with Hero’s ability to make, get materials, and promote products. Being the biggest motorcycle maker in India, Hero was in a good position to make use of the large motorcycle market in the country and meet the increasing demand for electric vehicles.

Hero MotoCorp’s teamwork with Zero Motorcycles showed how much they care about eco-friendly transportation. They wanted to bring Zero’s electric motorcycles to India so that people here could have access to advanced and clean ways of getting around. The exciting part was that Zero Motorcycles also planned to make their bikes in India. This would make India an important place for producing electric vehicles.

In October 2022, Energica, another company that makes high-quality electric motorcycles, said they wanted to come to India by 2024. But because Hero MotoCorp joined forces with Zero Motorcycles, they were in a strong position to speed up India’s shift to electric bikes. This partnership wouldn’t only affect India but also have an impact on the global market for electric vehicles.

Cancellation Of The Yamaha Neo Electric Scooter Launch

Yamaha Neo Electric Scooter

Yamaha has decided to scrap its plans to launch the Yamaha Neo’s electric scooter in India. Eishin Chihana, the Chairman of Yamaha India, had earlier expressed interest in introducing an adapted version of the Neo’s electric scooter for the Indian market.

However, the model’s range of 37km falls short of the expectations of Indian consumers, who are increasingly seeking electric vehicles with real-world ranges exceeding 100km on a single charge. Competing electric scooter brands like Ola, Ather, and TVS already offer such ranges, making the Neo’s offering less attractive in the market.

Yamaha’s Focus On Performance And Brand Value

Chairman Chihana has stated that Yamaha’s European audience chooses electric vehicles for their eco-friendly and sustainability features. In contrast, the average Indian customer seeks a cost-effective offering. Yamaha’s current portfolio of internal combustion engine (ICE)-based motorcycles includes stylish, sporty, and economical products, and the brand is well-known for its Racing Blue paint scheme and high-performance motorcycles. Yamaha intends to carry forward this DNA and brand image into its first electric vehicle (EV) offering for the Indian market.

FAME II Scheme Guidelines

The FAME II scheme aims to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by providing incentives for their purchase. Under the scheme, electric scooters with a minimum speed of 40 km/h and a range of at least 80 km per charge are eligible for subsidies. The scheme provides a subsidy of up to Rs. 15,000 per kWh of battery capacity, subject to certain conditions.

According to the scheme guidelines, the portable charger should be included in the vehicle’s price and not sold separately. The government is trying to recover over Rs. 800 crore in subsidies that were wrongly claimed by various electric vehicle manufacturers.
