(Last Updated On: October 19, 2022)

Key Highlights

  • Motorola teases a rollable concept smartphone
  • The company demoed the phone at Lenovo Tech world 2022
  • It is packable at 4-inches high

What looks to be a rollable smartphone that can change size at the push of a button has been teased by Motorola. The product was briefly demonstrated by the company during Lenovo Tech World. A button press causes the smartphone’s screen to enlarge and decrease in size.

The phone has a flexible OLED display that measures 6.5-inch when fully extended and “just over” 4-inch when fully retracted with the push of a button. The device is actually packable at 4-inch high. The fact that the material on the screen including the home screen and video adjusts to the size is another intriguing feature of this concept phone.

This is not the first time a rollable concept smartphone has been shown. Oppo and TCL previously both displayed rollable phones. In fact, LG was even closer to releasing a rollable phone on the market before it completely stopped producing smartphones last year.

Motorola’s approach to making rollable phones is a little different than its competitors. The smartphone concept produced by Motorola grows vertically rather than horizontally. Instead of creating a smartphone-tablet hybrid device, the goal is to create a phone that can change screen size based on what you are doing.

The launch of Motorola’s rollable concept phone comes at a time when every smartphone resembles one another. Although experts claim that phone innovation has at a standstill, companies like Motorola hope to disprove this claim with their new phone design. Samsung is another player looking to innovate smartphones with foldable devices. Motorola itself has launched three interactions of Razr foldable phones in the past.

The specifications, cost, or even a potential release date for the rollable phone were all kept a secret by Motorola as of now. It’s even unclear whether the rollable phone will ever leave the lab and go on sale. Having said that, it is obvious that this product is a component of Motorola’s smartphone strategy.
